FROM MANHATTAN BY FERRY
If coming from Grand Central or the East Side, green lines 4 or 5 to Bowling Green, and then stroll southeastward along the edge of Battery Park to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal – not the touristic boats to the statue of Libery, with are to your southwest; if coming from the West Side, red lines 1 or 9 to South Ferry Terminal, then walk upstairs; if coming from Midtown, take the yellow lines N, R or W to Whitehall, and then stroll a few hundred yards SW
or bus down to the southern tip of Manhattan, to the Staten Island Ferry terminal, which is being rebuilt and is a mess. Wander upstairs; there are no tickets to buy, so wait for the doors to open. At last the blue barriers slide back . . . . The mob sweeps you aboard; make sure you stand on the port side out, starboard home (to Staten Island), so you can gaze at the statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
This is the best free voyage in the world. It takes 25 minutes to cross the harbour. Once in the terminal, surge up ramp C -- don't dawdle; the buses wait for the ferries and then go -- and get on number 46. It will take you twelve
minutes to reach, first a gigantic hospital, then, next door, our handsome blackstone church. The bus-stop is directly in front of the front doors; follow the pleasant sound of the
choir rehearsing and find a pew . . . .
Or head up ramp F and get a taxi.
